How to Tell If Your VoIP Quality is Good Enough?

Last week, GL Communications inc. announces that they have released their newest measurement utility called EMU. This will measure the Echo Path Delay and the Echo Return Loss of voice calls that take place. Mr. Robert Bichefsky, Senior Manager at GL, said that an “Echo can be as simple as sidetone, or more complex such as line, and acoustic echo. The EMU when combined with GL’s Analyzers, or Voiceband Analyzer, additional voice quality metrics such as round trip delay (RTD), voice quality, and noise can also be measured”.

This step marks another advancement in the ability to regulate and measure VoIP calls. The digitization of office phone systems created an ability to place specific algorithms that can measure small scale problems with the sound quality and are able to alert the telecommunication services provider within seconds. As more companies turn to VoIP as their main communication systems, the ability to monitor quality is certainly one of the many draws to the digital systems. And as these systems become the standard office communication systems, more third party companies will be able to create programs and applications for new VoIP features. Remember the days when call waiting was the latest thing in office communications? Technology is moving faster into the next stages of its evolution. And telecommunications are apparently leading the way.
