Study Suggests VoIP Users Talk Twice as Long as Mobile Users

A recent study, conducted by a company called Openfind found that the subscribers of mobile VoIP solutions talked over two and a half times longer than their average mobile calls. The reason that this study is important is because we are on the verge of a shift in the way people are communicating. Competitors worldwide are trying to figure out why VoIP telephones are gaining popularity among a younger generation of connected consumers.
The study was carried out during a three day holiday weekend period. All of the users had the availability of both their existing phone number and the VoIP capability.
The study also suggests that mobile companies may try to enter the VoIP industry and create their own VoIP phone systems in order to keep consumers in their firm grip.

grip.fffOpenmind found that subscribers of its mobile VoIP and messaging solution, Portico are talking on average, over two and a half (2.5) times longer than the average mobile voice call. This trend is significant as it points to valuable revenue opportunities for mobile operators as they compete with Skype and other over-the-top service providers. The study was carried out amongst Portico users from April 22nd through April 25th, 2011 over a busy holiday weekend. With Portico, users can make and receive calls and texts using their existing mobile number by using a personal webphone, accessed online from their mobile service provider’s portal. Users can make calls for the same cost of a local mobile call, even when abroad. The launch of the service has discouraged subscribers from using over-the-top services such as Skype and offers a more compelling user experience.
